Does Your Texas Family Have An Emergency Kit?

Smart residents prepare for emergencies, and parents of young children in the Lumberton area should be aware of the special nature of preparing their families for emergencies.

Most Beaumont parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Beaumont is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Beaumont – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes Texas kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Beaumont kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Beaumont neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

A great snack ingredient is peanut butter. It is an inexpensive source of protein and calories and gives Beaumont children the nutrients they need to grow and to stay healthy.

Peanut Butter Banana Pops

Bananas, cut in half width-wise
Popsicle sticks
Peanut butter
Chopped nuts, sprinkles, or other topping

Take the popsicle sticks and push them carefully into the cut bananas. Spread peanut butter over the bananas and roll in nuts or other topping. Freeze. Enjoy.

Peanut Butter Balls

This is the kind of recipe you can’t really mess up, and the portions are approximate.

about 1 cup of peanut butter
a few tablespoons of honey (2-3)
a few tablespoons of instant dry milk

Mix everything together until it forms a large ball. Pinch off small pieces of dough, and roll into ball shapes. Store in the refrigerator, and pull them out at snack time.

Beaumont Teens At Risk For Eating Disorders

Hello! Welcome to the Beaumont children’s health blog. I am Dark Chocolate Proponent Adam Green. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Beaumont children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the Lumberton area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in Lumberton about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.1 According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Beaumont parents should be aware that even young Lumberton children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

Texas pediatricians can help Beaumont parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.

Hello Voth! Welcome to my children’s health blog. I am a concerned parent and advocate for improved children’s health in the Voth area.

Today’s topic is energy drinks. Many Voth teens are under the false impression that energy drinks like Rock Star and Red Bull are similar to sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade.

Energy drinks are completely different from electrolyte replacement drinks and we need to help our children understand the health risks they pose. Energy drinks contain dangerous chemicals that can harm kid’s growing bodies, especially their teeth.

Energy drinks contain citric acid, fruit juices and extracts, sugar, and a dangerous chemical that gives them their bright color. They can damage tooth enamel with prolonged use.

It is important for us Voth parents to model healthy behavior for our children. If your kids see you guzzle energy drinks, you may want to think about the example you are setting.
